Chevy 383 Performance Engine History

The Chevrolet 383 engine was not a production engine; it was created by using a Chevrolet 350 block. Some engine builders figured out how to turn down a Chevy 400 crankshaft mains to fit inside a Chevrolet 350 block. Initially, they used 400 connecting rods to create the 383 rotating assembly, but later they discovered that they only needed different pistons and Chevy 5.7 rods, which resulted in a better square engine. The higher revving 383 engines produced more horsepower and created a significant amount of torque in the bottom end, making them second in popularity behind the Chevrolet 350 for street rods, street cruisers, everyday drivers, work trucks, and boats. The Chevy 383 engines are an aftermarket hit, making them the best-selling Chevy small block aftermarket performance engine in Chevy's engine building history. These motors are created using the Chevrolet 350 production block, and in the aftermarket, even better blocks have been created by Dart and Brodix, which are made of aluminum and steel. The 4-bolt main 383 engines became a sensation across the entire aftermarket performance industry for producing a significant amount of horsepower.

At Motor1Engines, we take the 383 and create a high-performance engine that produces great horsepower and torque for our customers. We use the best quality parts from Dart, Scat, and Eagle to build these motors for great running longevity in any application, whether it's for the street, track, or marine. We know how to create the ultimate 383 engine that will give you years of reliable service for your engine application. Chevy 383 Parts Journey

First, let's start with the Chevy 350 block. If we have a good one in stock, we'll use that. Otherwise, we can use your 350 block, or a new 350 casting.

We use Erson cams to customize each cam for our 383 engine builds, and Durobond cam bearings. For the rotating assembly, we use Eagle or Scat, which includes the pistons, rings, rods, and crankshaft. We use King bearings for the 383 main and rod bearings, and stainless steel for the intake and exhaust valves, with high-performance valve springs and steel or titanium keepers.

For the heads, we use steel or aluminum from Dart, Brodix, AFR, and other brands, along with ARP 350 head studs, rocker arm studs, and main cap studs. We also use aluminum rocker arms, a Melling Doubler roller timing chain, and a new steel timing chain cover. Lastly, we balance the entire 383 rotating assembly.

How We Build The Chevy 383 Stroker

Here is our multistep process for our 383 stroker crate engine build:

  1. We clean the block, then we Magnaflux the block in a coil wrap, then we machine the block to create clearance. For the 383 stroker crankshaft, also we check clearance for the 383 connecting rods to the camshaft, then we do a final cleaning of the block, to prepare for assembly.

  2. We install Durobond cam bearing. Then we lube them.

  3. We lube the cam lobes and install the cam.

  4. We install the main bearing in the 383 block.
